Things My Cha-Bo-Lang Cannot Stand

lim peh ka li kong

Being imprisoned married for so many years, I know my cha-bo-lang pretty well. I also know of some things she cannot stand me doing which me usually do behind her back but sometimes kena caught by her. =_="""

1) Dig gold until no day no night. (Skip this point 1 if you are eating now)
Lim peh also dont know why leh, this digging habit of mine just clings onto me for the longest time. Actually hor, digging is okay one la just do not roll it between your thumb and finger and then 弹 shoot it out like a bullet can liao.

2) Slack completely in the sofa watching T.V. after meal - A real potato 大番薯
Who will actually sit in an upright posture at home after a hard day´s work while resting? Somemore after a sumptuous dinner and watching T.V.? At home sure must relax lah so once in a while we should slack a bit at home.

3) Shake leg
Lim peh think ah, for men to shake legs is ok one la, girl girl shake legs then not so nice. The Chinese believes that if your shake your leg then your wealth will also be shaken away. No wonder lim peh no money leh.

4) Keeping my hair too long
Actually hor, now that I still have hair I should try to keep it long long if not later no hair, want to keep also cannot then how? Lim peh change my mind in keeping long hair after my cha-bo-lang told me, "Lau Beng, you look at least 20 15 10 5 years younger with short hair la." Immediately after her words of wisdom, lim peh went to cut my hair short short, ya ya me vain-pot, can?

5) Spend too much time in front of the computer
You know la, since me love to write blogs, how not to spend time in front of the computer but my cha-bo-lang thinks otherwise? She feels that by spending 8 to 9 hours in the office facing the computer is bad enough thus she refrains requests me not to use computer at home. So my beloved, nice, friendly, avid, yan-dao, chio readers, if one day you find my blog growing grass due to the lack of updating, you know the culprit reason to it.

6) Use too much Mobile phone unnecessarily
My cha-bo-lang very kiasi health conscious one, she detests people from using the mobile phones. So when me talk cock discuss important issues with my buddies using the handphone, she will sure to give me her dagger stare.

7) Buy too much 4D
You know what is the problem with buying 4D? Difficult to strike? Wrong la. The most difficult part with buying 4D is when you buy some numbers for a while and then you tell yourself you will stop buying after this month then bingo your numbers open and your strike some money, usually not much la, maybe around $500 to $1,000. So having tasted the shiokness of striking 4D, you will continue to buy some more numbers and then after 3 months not even a fart and just before you plan to let go, you strike a little bit again and the cycle goes round.

Stop buying completely? No way cos you scared once your let go your favourite 心水 number, it opens first price then you will sure 捶心肝, cow father cow mother one.

8) Don´t like to exercise
As age is catching up on me and laziness is my middlename, Exercise is really not my cup of tea BUT my cha-bo-lang will force psycho sweet-talk me to do exercise with her.

TV Commercials

lim peh ka li kong

Today lim peh did something very stupid BUT for the sake of my cha-bo-lang I have no regrets in doing so and I will do it again if she wants me to.

Before telling you about the stupid act, let me share with you my views on the few advertisements which are air-ed in our local tv channels lately.

Recently, I have seen a few advertisements: some darn funny but some really cannot make it.

The 1 which me think really cannot make it is the stoopid dinosaur after drinking the drink left peacefully, somemore shed a tear...der.

1 that me like very much is the "... so how do you spell it...Singapore... hello... Mumbai... Mumbai la ..." and the Indian man shook his head in utter disbelief that some guy actually trunk-called to order food in India from Singapore, ha ha LMAO.

Another one is the one where 2 gangster-look-alike men demanded from the shopkeeper for "Can you give me Anything" and the shopkeeper offered everything except the drinks and was humtum-ed makes me smile, not because of the violence but the comical facial expression.

Lastly, the recent "Takuya Kimura 木村拓哉" Gatsby Moving Rubber is quite cute although many find the commercial quite bo-liao.

Ok, back to my stupid act this morning.

My cha-bo-lang wasn´t feeling well when she woke up and according to her, the ceiling was spinning when she tried getting out of bed.

Before I left for work, I raised my both hands and pull my hair (although not much hair by comparison), and I started to sing, "Give me Gatsby... la la la la..." and did the slow body spins and swaying my body in slow motion JUST LIKE Takuya Kimura 木村拓哉 in the Gatsby commercial.

My cha-bo-lang looked at me, don´t know to cry or laugh, (不知好气还是好笑) but she laughed at last.

Yeah yeah I know la, this middle-aged fatty-bom-bom uncle cannot compare to the 万人迷 Takuya Kimura 木村拓哉 but to see my cha-bo-lang laughing at my stupid act is worth my effort.

A Snake In The House

lim peh ka li kong

Today early early, 天未光、狗未吠, sky also not yet fully bright and dog hasn´t even bark, the rapid knockings on my bedroom door woke lim peh up. It´s our maid knocking our bedroom door and she told us a shocking piece of news, "got snake in the house, sir."

Me quickly rushed out to the kitchen to take a look to see if it really was a snake or maybe just an earthworm.

Snake (Oh-oh, seen by them liao)

or

Earthworm? (Not me la, me playing happily in the park)

When me took a look, nabeh, really got a snake but luckily it was still only a baby snake, the full body length of about 10 inches. (The body is black in colour with a triangular head and some white lines around its body)

lim peh very clever one, took a pair of normal chopsticks to try to pick the baby snake by its neck. (Me always see on National Geographic Channel, the experts always catch hold of the BIG snake easily, bare-handed somemore).

While lim peh was concentrating hard trying to catch the baby snake with the pair of chopstick, a roar hit me from behind, "Lao Beng, what are you doing? Catching a poisonous snake with a pair of stupid chopsticks? Kiang tio hor, mai keh-kiang." My cha-bo-lang was standing behind me.

She took a pair of metal tongs from the drawers and while she tried to pick up the baby snake, the snake was agitated and numerous times, the snake stood on its belly and attacked the tongs. The baby snake actually moved around rapidly and stood up with a "I-am-ready-to-bite-you" posture.

Luckily, within few minutes, cha-bo-lang caught hold of the baby snake and put it into a plastic bag and told our maid to send it the the nearby Police Post.

"Lao Beng, what are you thinking ah? Catching a cobra-look-alike snake with a pair of chopsticks!!"

"Huh? Cobra meh? I thought just normal baby snake only what."

15 minutes after our maid left, a police officer called me and informed me that they will be contacting the authotiries from the Zoo to collect the baby snake.

Me informed the police officer to do a check around our area, cos when there is a baby snake, there sure to be a mother snake somewhere around and snakes normally give birth to more than 1 baby.

As a matter of fact, me and my cha-bo-lang once saw a snake (about 2 - 3 feet long) in the park when we went for our night stroll after our dinner about a year ago. Maybe that was 1 of its babies.

lim peh kong wan liao

** UPDATE : We were informed by the Authority from the Zoo that the baby snake which we caught was a Wolf snake also known as a House snake. It is not venomous and usually afraid of people and will run away upon seeing human beings. **

Snail Time

lim peh ka li kong

A day is like a decade, no, in fact, it´s more like a Century to me.

Everything is like in slow motion.

Nothing is interesting at all.

Even my favourite 炒米粉面 does not arouse my appetite.

BUT

Just 1 more lonely night to endure.

1 more day to go......

Still Without You

lim peh ka li kong

This morning when me woke up....

There was no one there to try to out-run me to use the toilet.

There were no fingers poking into my nostrils to stop my snoring last night.

For more than 24 hours liao, I never hear a single nagging.

I do things my way, my choice, my decision.

I have 100% freedom, to eat, to do things, to just nuah around. (Such rare occasions and opportunities for a married man).

YET...

I am not a bit happy at all.

It is now that I know that I am 贱骨头 yearning for her nagging.

It is now that I understand the true meaning of "Taking things for granted".

It is now that I truly realise that my life is never complete without her around.

2 more days to go......

Without You

lim peh ka li kong

The minute she walked into the Departure Hall, I knew nothing will be good to me for the next few days.

I am so very right!

=====

Today everything doesn´t seem right to me.

The food is tasteless.

The music from the radio is just un-tahanable noise.

Even the air sucks.

The bed will definitely be too BIG for me tonight.

I am very moody, hyper pushy and extremely restless.

It´s like PMS or an old man going through andropause.

阿肥狗 - Lucky

lim peh ka li kong

My cha-bo-lang is a dog lover but ever since our last 2 dogs passed away, we have decided not to keep any more dogs. Reasons being my cha-bo-lang loves dogs so much until she cannot take it when they are gone.

As we usually frequent temples during 初一、十五(First and Fifteenth of lunar calendar), we happened, in fact it is SHE, happened to find a BIG, FAT dog at one of the temples which we go often.

That Big, Fat dog has a name which fits a dog well - Lucky (whatelse?)

Lucky has a pair of beautiful brown eyes and whenever she looks at us, my cha-bo-lang's heart will melt.

Despite Lucky's big size, she is hyper friendly and easily mixes and plays with anyone who cares to go up to her and touch her.

She is famous for catching rats at the temple, yes RATS and apparantly she has very good results (according to the people at the temple).

One of her favourate trick is when you stand in front of her and say," Lucky, hand", she will raise and offer her right paw to you and also her left paw respectively.

Normally when me and my cha-bo-lang go to look for her, she is usually sleeping at a cool corner but upon hearing my cha-bo-lang calling her name, she will wake up and rush towards her.

Although she is closer to my cha-bo-lang, she does come to me as me always sayang her head affectionately though at times me quite scared of her saliva.

My cha-bo-lang is so fond of this Lucky that she usually tells me, "Oei, 阿肥 (calling me), I am going to see my dog, you coming along?"

It's good that my cha-bo-lang is happy with seeing Lucky as and when she is free and the temple is only a 5-min drive from our house.

lim peh kong wan liao

Important Note: Although the license collar tag isn't around her neck when me took the photo using my handphone, Lucky is a licensed dog whereby the owner paid the license fees every year without fail. It was only taken down when the owner bathed her earlier.

Me And My Big Mouth

lim peh ka li kong

Lately me seems to be having some problems with my cha-bo-lang; Apparantly me no match with her leh when come to mind game or is it that me a little bit over suspicious?

Me vividly remembered that it was during the fifteenth day of the Lunar Calendar night while we were having our usual routine stroll after our dinner in a park nearby our house.

When strolling slowly, my cha-bo-lang was looking and admiring the big bright moon in the sky while me trying to fan the irritating mosquitoes away from me. Wonder why the mosquitoes only like to bite me? Ha, think my blood more tasty la.

While me was busying looking out for the mosquitoes, my cha-bo-lang suddenly turned towards me and said, "Lau Beng, you very good huh? 你干的好事。I am very disappointed with the mistake and wrong done by you!"

The moment me heard her saying "你干的好事" and saw her eyes open big big looking at me, my sweat started to come out from my forehead, neck and back despites it was a rather windy night.

"Eh... 老婆, what...you mean mis...mis...mistake ah?" Jia-lat, begin to stutter some more.

"You still dare to ask me? You don't even know what wrong you had done?" My cha-bo-lang answered me back with questions.

In my heart, me was thinking "Die la, this time really jia-lat" and my mind was racing wildly trying to recall what mistakes and wrongs I had done lately.

"Why? Keep quiet only huh? 默认 right?"

"No la, how to admit when I don't even know what wrongs I have done?"

"哼!! Don't admit your mistake, done. You can jolly well sleep in the hall tonight for all I care."

Oh no, gonna be 厅长 tonight again?

"No la, I want to sleep in the bedroom la, please tell me what wrong I have done? I really don't know leh."

"You better confessed before I get more angry." My cha-bo-lang replied sternly.

"Eh... eh... is it because last weekend I striked 3rd prize never tell you?" Me was thinking, how come she know I secretly strike 4D?

"Nope, it's not this issue." My cha-bo-lang replied.

"Then is it because that day I secretly watched the (RA) Japanese vcd at Lau Hero's house?" Me was thinking must be Lau Hero accidentally spilt the beans. Wa-lao, brother, how can leak out like that, very dangerous to me one you know?!

"Nope, it's not about you hum-sup men watching pornographic movies." My cha-bo-lang gave me a disgusting look which made me feel shameful and dare not look at her.

"Eh... or is it because I secretly went to eat fried chicken and french fries during my lunch time?" Wondering who is the busy body from my office who told my cha-bo-lang I ate unhealthy food for lunch?

"Ha! Not this issue also."

"Eh... eh... eh..." My mind was a complete blank then.

"Still cannot think of the mistakes?" My cha-bo-lang stared at me with her 2 big round eyes.

Then something came into my mind, must be this issue la.

"Eh... sorry la 老婆, me only look at the girl girl. No motive one la, you know me what, NATO one. Give me 老虎胆 also dare not do anything one la, just see see look look with appreciation only ma."

Upon hearing my confession, my cha-bo-lang nodded her head and walked home quietly. Me dare not to utter a single sound and followed quietly behind her trying to figure out what's her mood now?

"老婆... " Me trying to talk to my cha-bo-lang.

"老婆 what? So you have been doing all these wrong things behind my back huh?" My cha-bo-lang turned and talked to me. "If I don't question you, you just keep quiet and silently doing all those wrong things."

"Huh? You... you mean you didn't know all these things ah?"

"So, Mr Beng, how much did you strike for your 3rd price huh? You not only hum-sap, you are eating junk food for lunch and look at girl girl and drooling all the way! Don't you know your spare-tyre is getting bigger everyday?"

Wa-lao eh, think I kena tricked by my cha-bo-lang already, me and my big mouth.

Because of this incident, my 4D prize all gave to my cha-bo-lang and my pocket money from her was lessen drastically thus not able to eat fried chicken again, 唉!!

Any friend working near me can buy me good lunch or not? Me have been eating bread as lunch (packed by my cha-bo-lang) since then.

lim peh ka li kong

Yesterday when me came home from work, the moment me stepped into the house, a nice yummy smell immediately hit my sense of smell.

Me saw my cha-bo-lang cooking in the kitchen, Woo Hoo!! She's preparing our Valentine Dinner.

I had a good share of fruit salad as well as a vegetable salad prior to the main course.

Finally, my cha-bo-lang brought out 2 big plates of main course and the smell really made my stomach growl loudly.

The photo wasn't taken well due to the resolution of my lousy handphone. Let me describe the food on the plate: there are 2 halves of Crayfish, Spaghetti with Crab-sticks and ham, Bacon with Broccoli, Fried prawn and fish with Wasabi sauce.

After we finished our dinner, me brought out the present me bought for my cha-bo-lang: A CD by High Society - Amor. The songs compiled in the CD consist mainly of Spanish songs.

Eh, sorry hor, me no buy flower for my cha-bo-lang, not because me not romantic but didn't want to be a sucker to pay so high a price for the flower.

Just when we went to bed, me saw a present and a card on my side of the bed. Ha, my cha-bo-lang also got present for me leh. It was a card and a CD.

Huh? CD also? We 2 really think alike.

Anyway, this is the Valentine Day's Card from my cha-bo-lang. (Sorry, contents written inside the card is not share-able).

The CD I got was a plain Music Collection with different types of songs and all the songs were very relaxing and soothing. (Although I did not listen to the CD while having tea).

2006

During the crossing of year 2005 to year 2006, my wife and I were doing our Special Count-Down at Kong Meng San (光明山).

We reached the temple at 6.30 pm and with us were my 2 sisters-in-law, 2 nephews and a niece. As we were there doing the Special Count-Down before, we have no problem locating the venue.

The count-down with the Monks was, as usual, at midnight but there was a great event at Kong Meng San (光明山) whereby the Venerable Monk from Tibet was leading people to chant "Om Mani Padme Hung" for a hundred million times known as "The 100 Million MANI Recitation Retreat : 一亿观音心咒襌修"

There were many people who took part in the Retreat and many were there for a full cycle of 7-days chanting "Om Mani Padme Hung" from morning to night. As both my wife and I are working, we were only able to join in the Retreat during the last night.

We sat in the big hall with many other people and later all of us were blessed by the Verenable Tibet Monk at the end of the Retreat when all of us line-up in a single row and were led to him.

The session ended at around 10 pm and we had some refreshment before the commencement of the Special Count-Down. The Special Count-Down event of the Temple every year is the traditional sounding of the Big Bell - A total of 108 strokes (鸣钟一百零八次). In fact, the 108 sounding of bells are practiced in temples all over the world.

As time tickled nearer and nearer to 12 mid-night, more and more people gathered around the Temple's Big Bell waiting patiently for the main event of the year.

At 12 o'clock sharp, the Monk sound the Bell for 108 times and we made our wishes during the event. After the completion of the 108 strokes, we wished the people around us a Happy New Year.

2005 is over and 2006 unfolds itself ahead of us.

With full contentment, peaceful mind and warmth in our hearts, we headed home with smiles on our faces.

Old Beng At Clementi Central

lim peh ka li kong

Last week got one night me and my cha-bo-lang went to Clementi Central to jalan jalan see see look look and also to pay my PUB bills. As the weather was very cooling, we just walked to Clementi hand in hand without driving.

I tell you ah, the PUB bill now like higher and higher leh, every month me have to pay very much but bo-bian la, cannot don't pay one, if not later they cut off our water and electricity supply more jia-liat.

As we walked past the Hawker Centre, the smell of Satay made me hungry again although we had our dinner at home before coming out. Think the smell was blown to us and we finally sat down and ordered some satay to eat. (Supposed to walk to Clementi to do some strolling exercise, yet ended up in eating Satay? How to keep a healthy life in Singapore when there's so much good food?)

After eating our Satay, we proceed to the Post Office to make payment for our PUB bills via the S.A.M Machine.

Think because Christmas was just round the corner, there were many many people there. While me was ordering a packet of Bamboo Juice, eh...I mean Sugar-cane juice, my cha-bo-lang proceeded to look at shoes in one of the shoe shop not far away.

After packing the drink, me walked towards my cha-bo-lang and on the way, a chio-bu walked towards me. I couldn't help but to stare at her cos she resembled Dolly Parton to certain extend if you know what I mean. Think that "Dolly Parton look-alike" doesn't know how to buy clothings for herself cos the T-shirt she was wearing was definitely 2 size smaller and Old Beng almost had a nose bled trying to read the Logo printed it.

As we were nearer to each other, Old Beng me shifted my body slightly to the left in order not to block her way and make sure that I would not accidentally knock her then no good la. This one if knock head-on or should I say chest-on sure internal injury 内伤 one.

At that moment when me moved my body to my left, "Dolly Parton look-alike" also moved her body to her right which was my left. Heng ah, me stopped immediately and of course moved my body to the right then to avoid collision but then hor, she also very cartoon one, she also moved to the same direction thus the 2 of us were like doing a dance step. Left right left right. Finally, we managed to walk past each other without any collision or body contact whatsoever. (Just wondering to myself, do I considered it as lucky or unlucky for not having body contact? - My conscience told me should not think too much about it but hello, Dolly Parton look-alike leh?)

When I saw my cha-bo-lang looking at me, whatever Parton also got to pardon me liao.

"Why? Lau Beng, new dance steps huh?" My cha-bo-lang looked at me.

"Eh...no la, where got dance....just that the road too narrow la." Me started to feel sweat dripping down my back when answering. Luckily my cha-bo-lang didn't say much and we proceed to the Post Office to make payment.

While me was scanning our PUB bill and keying in my ATM information, me saw a pink paper-bag sitting on top of the S.A.M machine just above our heads. Nobody was around us and me could see the shadow of wires through the paper-bag.

Me told my cha-bo-lang about it and stretched my hand to try to take the paper-bag down to see the contents inside.

"Oei, lau beng, don't you touch it." Cha-bo-lang slapped my hand.

"Ouch! Why you beat me?"

"How do you know it is safe to touch it? It could be an explosive item as you can see that there are wires in it." Cha-bo-lang said.

"No la, I think it is something that someone forgotten to collect when he placed it there to make payment only la."

"It is better safe than sorry."

"So how? Just leave it there lor and mind our own business and don't be K-poh la." Me then held my cha-bo-lang's hand and walked out of the Post Office.

"Lau Beng! How can you be so irresponsible? What if it really is a bomb? What if it exploded and tomorrow news will be flying everywhere then you think your big head can sleep peacefully again? 你良心过得过去吗?

"So what you want me to do? I want to bring it down and see, you don't allow me then now you say all these bo-liao things to scare me?"

"Call the authority to inform them of the suspicious paper-bag."

So me called 999 to make a report. (Actually don't know what numbers to call la, think 999 can handle everything one la.)

"Hello, Police Station, may I help you?"

"Eh, hello, I want to report something but don't know whether if this is the correct numbers to call. I saw a Paper-bag with wires inside which was left ......" So me told the police officer the location and description of the paper-bag.

The police officer told me that they will send someone down to check on it and took down Old Beng's particulars but me only told him my name without giving him my contact numbers.

We did not wait for the policeman to come and walked home.

There was no mentioned of anything in the Newspaper and me will never know whether what was in the paper-bag but like my cha-bo-lang said, "At least I can sleep at night liao."

Old Beng Went To Bukit Timah Hill

lim peh ka li kong

Me and my cha-bo-lang sometimes go for our Sunday morning stroll at the following few places : Botanical Garden, West Coast Park, Sunset way and Bukit Timah Hill provided we wake up early. Many times, Old Beng could not wake up early and will just hope that my cha-bo-lang will let me sleep longer. Sunday morning leh!

Yesterday, we went to Bukit Timah Hill although we woke up a little bit later than usual but the weather was fine without sun, very cooling.

When we reached the carpark, it was full as usual and many vehicles were parking along the road side illegally. I felt pity for the residents who stay there.

Luck was with us cos when we reached the carpark, we found an empty lot, heng ah, don't have to waste time waiting for lot.

When we got out of our car, me saw some monkeys sitting on top of the parked vehicles in the carpark and 1 monkey even shit on the top of a car. Ai-ya, forgot to take down the car plate numbers to buy 4D, who knows, shit is luck, according to the Chinese.

I heard of a sad incident which happened at the foot of Bukit Timah Hill not too long ago. The monkeys have been coming out from the forest and started to go around the carpark area to look for food. As monkeys move very fast and sometimes it is quite dangerous because drivers could not see them dashing across their moving vehicles.

Heard that 1 monkey was knocked down by a car and it died as it was a fatal knock. The passer-by who were there saw that a whole gang of monkeys all crowded round the dead monkey and 1 of them (probably the mother) was hugging and carrying the dead monkey, crying loudly and letting out loud shrieks mourning the lost of its child.

Anyway, back to our sunday stroll. Me and my cha-bo-lang climbed up the slope and boy the slope was quite steep man, probably at a 45 degrees inclination. Old Beng me managed to climb up with my cha-bo-lang but to be honest, quite siong though, think me getting old already.

We finally reached the top and on our way down, we saw a path at the side of the hill - Catchment Path and we decided to take the route and see where it would lead to. Anyway, how big can Bukit Timah Hill be?

The path wasn't too difficult to walk as the roots of the trees formed a natural fleets of steps and with the cool breeze and surrounded by so many trees and strolling with loved one was in fact a very great feeling. Halfway down, we saw a direction board showing the routes of the Catchment Path we were walking, hmmn looked alright to me.

After descending for about 20 minutes, we came to a big open space with just low-grass field. We saw many grasshoppers hopping and flying around us, guess I have not seen so many of them since my childhood time.

We continued to walk for another 30 minutes and saw a small road with a signboard indicating that it was a bicycle route and a warning sign to the people who would like to walk on the route as the cyclists sometimes do cycle in very fast speed and the route was indeed narrow.

My cha-bo-lang asked me whether we should take the bicycle route or walked back to where we started, the Catchment Path?

I was not sure why I was stubborn but told her that we would continue to head forward and I was sure that we would be able to get out of the "quiet" area but in my heart, I was actually just pushing my luck. And yes, after walking for another 15 minutes, we came across a road, no longer the field road but road for vehicles with road chevron and road-sigh and saw a police car sped past us.

While I was standing at the side trying to figure out which direction to walk, my cha-bo-lang told me that there was a monkey just above my head. When I turned around to the direction she was pointing, I saw 1 huge monkey staring hard at me less than one foot away from me. I slowly turned my face away and walked away calmly.

Actually my heart was racing like hell cos I was bitten by a monkey when I was a small boy and that attack landed me in hospital thus I have this phobia towards monkey.

We continued to walk along the road but it was so deserted that not even a car drove pass us and I started to have the thinking that we were lost! Of course, in front of my cha-bo-lang, I pretended to be calm and cool if not, sure lose face one.

Then, we heard the motor-sound of a car coming from the road behind us and it was a van. I quickly waved for the driver to halt and asked him where the road will lead us to and which direction we should head to get back to the entrance of Bukit Timah Hill.

We told him that we were walking in Bukit Timah Hill and the next minute, we landed there without the slightest idea of where we were. He told us that we were rather far away from Bukit Timah Hill and he offered to give us a lift. We told him that it would be fine for us to walk but the expression on his face told us that it was not a very good idea so both of us hopped into his van.

He drove for about 20 minutes before we reached Bukit Timah Hill and he dropped us at where we parked our car.

My cha-bo-lang teased me the whole day for been such a sotong and got lost in Bukit Timah Hill.

I really have to thank the driver, Mr Lim, who was so kind to give us a lift although he wasn't heading towards the direction of Bukit Timah Hill.

There are still kind people in Singapore after all.

Old Beng Sunday Morning

lim peh ka li kong

Last Sunday morning, me and my cha-bo-lang after our routine morning stroll/walk/run/exercise at Botanic Garden (sometimes we go to Bukit Timah Hill instead), we went to Clementi Central to have our breakfast and also to do some marketing.

As usual, me headed straight for my favourite food, prawn noodle soup. My cha-bo-lang always tells me, "Ai-yo, lau beng why you always eat the same food day in day out, never change and try other type, not sian ah?"

"lau po, you are lucky me always stick to my original taste for everything, if not, then I probably will be changing in the taste of my food, my vehicle, my flat and also my cha-bo-lang.....ouch!!!!" the result for trying to be funny and humorous was being pulled at my ear again.

"You try to change me, don't know how to spell DEATH is it?" My cha-bo-lang grabbed my ear, pulled it and then turned clockwise for 180 degrees.

"Ai-ya, no la no la, just joking only. You no sense of humour one." Me quickly pulled away from her.

We then found an empty table and sat down after we both ordered our prawn noodle soup.

Then, me saw a very old couple (think the ah pek and ah ma at least 70 years old) walking towards the table we were sitting and asked to share the seats with us. Wah, these old husband and wife very lovingly leh, hold hands and the ah ma even took out her handkerchief and cleaned the seats before allowing the ah pek to sit down.

Ha, they also ordered the same prawn noodle soup like us.

Suddenly, me saw 3 young, pretty chio-bo sat down beside our table and me could not help but look at them without my eyes blinked a single time. Cannot blame me hum-sup la, the 3 young girls wore hot-pants and singlet-like t-shirt and some more faces red red after their morning exercise I think, so young so fresh so nice. I only dare to see see look look, yeah of course my cha-bo-lang still pretty and chio to me but honestly speaking hor, young girls half her age surely win at least one horse position la.

Yee? They also went to order the same prawn noodle soup, think this stall prawn noodle soup really nice.

When my poor eyes started to get tired again due to the secretly seeing cha-bo through the corner of my eyes (to avoid my cha-bo-lang from knowing I seeing girl girl), the hawker aunty brought 2 bowls of prawn noodles to our table.

But wait, she gave them to the old ah pek and ah ma instead to us. Me could see that they had ordered bee-hoon only and we ordered bee-hoon mee, so not my one.

Then hor, the hawker aunty also served the 3 young chio-bo 3 bowls of prawn noodle soup.

Wa-lau-a, my one don't have ah? Why aunty kept serving the others? Maybe she forgotten that I also got ordered.

I walked up to her and asked," Hello aunty, my 2 bowls of prawn bee-hoon mee soup not ready ah? Like very long already because I ordered before the old couple and the 3 young girls."

The aunty looked at me and said," Rush what? Now I cooked for you lor, cannot wait si bo?"

Wa-piang! Like that talked also can eh? "Oei! Aunty! Is it I eat free one ah, you forgot my order you just tell me properly, it is okay one but you talked like that si mi meaning? You should serve according to first come first serve ma, how can like that suka suka he first I last? Not right leh?"

"Er...er... sorry lor, I forget, now I cook for you." Aunty face malu malu apologised.

"Ok la, like that say at least something, how can you forget and some more so fierce?" I told her and walked back to my table.

My cha-bo-lang gave my hand a squeeze and told me never mind la, wait awhile lor.

After we finished our delicious prawn bee-hoon noodle soup, we went to the wet market to buy some vegetables and meat and fish and fruits and my cha-bo-lang almost bought the whole market. (ya ya I was a little bit exaggerate)

After that we saw an old man selling bamboo sticks and my cha-bo-lang bought 5 bamboo sticks as the ones at home were already old and the edge also picah liao.

"Lau beng, you wait for me and I need to go and buy some eggs." my cha-bo-lang told me. So me carried the 5 bamboo sticks and stood near the playground waiting for my cha-bo-lang.

Suddenly, a middle-aged uncle (just like old beng) walked up to me and said," Uncle, your bamboo sticks how to sell ah?"

"Huh? What how to sell?" Me did not understand his English and what he meant at all.

"How much one bamboo stick?" that uncle asked me again.

Wa-paing eh, he thought old beng me sell bamboo one. How can I looked like a man selling bamboo sticks?

"Hello, me no sell bamboo one hor, go there and ask that man la." Me pointed the direction where the seller had his small stall.

"Sorry, sorry, but you sure look like the bamboo man." The uncle said with a sneered tone and a grin on his face before he walked away.

Wa Kao! So what if I looked like a bamboo stick seller? Why must he showed his grin as if he looked down on people who makes a living by selling things?

What a day I had man, first I was not served for the noodle I ordered and then I was mistaken as a man selling bamboo.

Old Beng went to Hawker Centre

lim peh ka li kong

Last night, me and my cha-bo-lang went to have dinner after me knock-off and only the two of us without all our children dangling around.

We usually have a night out for dinner once a week and just the two of us, sort of having quality time together. Couples, especially those married for many years, must find and spend quality time together, if not, how to be loving in the long run? Even until now, after we have been married for so many years, we still hold hands whenever we go out alone and that is something me always enjoy doing.

Anyway, we went to have our dinner in a hawker centre near our house. As usual la, so very crowded one, since it was after office hour and during dinner time, so we only managed to get to share seats with another young couple. (Think they just came out to work cos they look so fresh even after a day's work.)

Look at Old Beng me, the face after work is really like over-night hum-ching-peng and also whole face very oily like the oil can drip down my face anytime for cooking.

The young couple so loving one, me saw the young man kept feeding his girlfriend and wipe the young girl's mouth after she ate every mouth of food. Somemore, the young man never one second shifted his eyes away from the young girl, only look at his girlfriend and nothing else. It's a miracle that he did not put food into his nose since he was eating without looking at his food at all.

Me looked at the young man and think to myself, I must also be more loving to my cha-bo-lang and so I started to look affectionately at my wife's pretty face and guess what I got in return?

"Oei, lau beng, kwa si mi? (see what?) Faster eat la, later food cold already not nice," my cha-bo-lang gave me a stare.

Ai-ya, this cha-bo-lang ah, me trying to be affectionate and maybe can be a romeo like that, yet she asked me see what? Like that how to be a loving husband?

Then me overheard the couple's conversation that they would go for a movie after their dinner.

Hmmn, good idea hor, maybe I could also go watch movie with my cha-bo-lang since the last movie we watched together in cinema was the Jack Neo's "Money Not Enough".

"Er, shall we go watch a show after we eat our dinner?" me asked my cha-bo-lang.

"You gila ah? Watch movie? You know now watch movie very expensive, better wait for VCD to come out then my friends will buy and then we can borrow from them la, why want to waste money?"

"Ai-ya, not very expensive also la," me trying to convince her to watch movie with me.

"Not expensive? You got a lot of money is it? Come, give me. I keep for you." my cha-bo-lang eyeing at my wallet while she talked to me.

"No no, I no much money," me quickly denied if not later kena chong-kong, then die la.

While we were eating, an old uncle and a blind woman walked towards us and tried to sell us tissue paper. My reaction then was to wave them away cos I do not need tissue paper la, me used handkerchief one, me very environmental mind.

Then I saw my cha-bo-lang took out a ten-dollar-note and gave it to the old uncle and got 3 packets of tissue paper from the blind lady.

Huh? $10 for 3 packets of tissue paper? Didn't my cha-bo-lang read newspaper that sometime, all these tissue paper old uncles/aunties/small children and handicapped people all got some people behind them, like a group of professional con-man?

I told my cha-bo-lang about what I thought and that she might be bluffed by them and some more she gave $10 for just 3 packets of tissue paper. Asked her see show, she said I waste money but like that gave $10 not waste money meh?

"Ai-yo lau beng, never mind whether they are genuine or not la. To me, I saw them really handicapped or maybe old and since I can help them by just a mere $10, why not? Ok, even if they really are con-man and what have I got to lose? To me, I see that they are in need and I give them with a helping heart so what if I am conned, I still wont know. Even if I know that they indeed conned me, so what? As I just said, my heart feels right in helping, the rest are secondary to me. My conscience is clear and that's good enough for me to donate money willingly."

I know I will never be able to argue with my cha-bo-lang so I just kept quiet and continued to indulge myself in my Ice-Kachang.

After dinner, me and my cha-bo-lang did not go for a movie but had a slow stroll back to our home, hand in hand of course.....

Old Beng In Trouble

lim peh ka li kong

Last night, me had a long and terok and bad night trying to reason out with my cha-bo-lang due to some misunderstanding issues.

At one time during our argument, my cha-bo-lang was down on her knees talking to me. (No la, I did not bull-shit you all la, she really kneeled down and talked to me). Dont be impatient la, read on my friends read on.

Last night when I got home, the whole atmosphere was very quiet and in total calmness, no children talking, no TV on-ing, no daughters or sons waiting to greet me at the door, the whole atmosphere was so quiet like nobody at home and it was only 9.30 pm. Die la, just like the bad storm coming prelude, total calmness and quietness.

My cha-bo-lang was sitting on the sofa waiting for me and all my 12 children were standing behind her looking at me as if I was really already a dead meat, if not dead yet also on the chopping board, any moment liao.

"Lau po da ren, I...I...I...", dont know why when I looked at my cha-bo-lang´s stern face, I cannot control my speech.

"I.. I what?" my cha-bo-lang looked at me calmly but I know deep inside she was very very very angry.

"I...I...I..." die leh, why I cannot talk properly? then a funny sound was heard "kek..kek...kek..." Wa-piang! my upper row and lower row of teeth were knocking uncontrollably.
(Er...me no frighten hor, just that our air-con was on for full blast)

"So, you always bluffed me say go lim chew with kaki but in actual fact, you went to look for mei mei, HUH?"

"No la, I where got? You know me one, NATO type, give me tiger heart and gut also dare not la." Then one of my daughter said, "Mummy, daddy not like that....." But before my little daughter could say anything further, my cha-bo-lang turned towards all 12 children and told them to go to bed immediately. Within seconds, the whole hall was left with only me and my cha-bo-lang.

"I...I..." just as I was about to explain myself, I let out a long loud fart "PHUUUUUTTTT!!!!!" Oh no, everytime I got excited or scared, I will inevitably fart.

"After you did your wronging, you still dare to fart so loudly?" She stood up and was going to twist my poor ear again.

Ai-yo, natural farting how can control one but how to reason with her especially at that moment when she was so angry?

"Huh, you noti now ah? Go find mei mei? Somemore bluf me only go drinking? and now still dare to fart so loudly and create air pollution and noise pollution huh? I know, you purposely showed me that you are not happy with me so answered by giving me your fart, is it? Lau beng, tonight you dont clarify your wronging done, I am gonna skin you alive."

Wah! Never had I seen my cha-bo-lang so angry so violent one. Good men dont fight with ladies so I quickly ran up to our bedroom to avoid a fight with her but my cha-bo-lang never gave up easily one and she followed me closely and pulled my ear on the way up the stairs.

I quickly speed up and ran into our bedroom and went hiding in my save bomb shelter and that was when my cha-bo-lang kneeled down and talked to me. "Lau beng, you come out from under the bed NOW!!!"

No way man, I am not gonna come out and then let her twist my poor ears again. Ai-yo, what have I done to deserve this? Hiding under our bed?

After about 1 hour, my cha-bo-lang finally stopped her scolding (think she felt tired and thirsty) and I had to use the toilet so bo-pian got to come out from under the bed.

Finally, after explaining and negotiating and with some conditions treaty agreed between us, the issue was finally resolved.

My cha-bo-lang had finally forgiven me and believed that I am still a good husband but now every month my pocket money is lessen by 20% and my cha-bo-lang had a new necklace and a promised trip every year plus I am not allowed to go drinking at night again (not for the next 3 months - heng ah, not permanent one)

Old Beng at Shop & Save

lim peh ka li kong

Last weekend me and my cha-bo-lang went to "Shop and Save" to do our weekly grocery shopping. Wa-piang, when we reached there we saw "people mountain people sea", like buy things no need money one.

Every corner we turned, sure saw many China Nationalities talking loudly in their China accent Chinese. I am not against China people but I sure do not like to see the Chinese women roaming around in their pyjamas. If wear lingerie ok lah, but no leh, all I saw were the old-fashioned type - some even bright red in colour. Luckily dont have any Chinese character printed on their pyjamas, if not really looked like the corpse baju.

I saw two Chinese women, while choosing chai sim at the Vegetable corner, peeling the leaves from another chai sim and stuffed the leaves into another bag containing chai sim. I was really puzzled by their action until my cha-bo-lang told me that the price charged for the chai sim by packet and not by weight or size. I could only shake my head because I think Chinese women maybe earned only a little money so trying ways and means to save more money. Then, I saw one of the women took out her handphone, wah, the latest Nokia model leh. Just like my friend, Ah Huat, earns less than 900 dollars a month yet bought a very expensive handphone with many functions which after 6 months of purchased never even see him use the functions before. Why waste money on handphone with functions you don't even know how to use or maybe he also not aware of the functions available?

As we were taking the chocolate from the shelves, I realised a packet of "Time out" chocolate bars was open and there were only 3 pieces left in the packet. OMG, some people must have open the packet and took the chocolate from inside and eat. Same thing went to the packet drinks because we saw a "6-pack" of Soya bean drinks had only 4 packets left intact and 2 half empty packets were left unfinished lying helplessly on the shelf.

Are these the work of the our fine Singaporeans? How can people be doing such things or is it the chocolates and drinks were eaten and drunk by cockroaches and rats?

The fruits section is usually the place we spent most time there because Old Beng and family love to eat a lot of fruits which is very good to our health. That day, Old Beng and my cha-bo-lang laughed until our tears rolled down our cheeks when we saw some wise guy placed 2 rambutans and a banana at the display shelf. The way the fruits were displayed resembled certain body parts of a man, I think must be the work of some mischievous teenager. Ai-yo I tell you all ah, luckily that day none of our children was with us, if not sure malu one.

When we were making our payment at the cashier counter, I realised one old man kept looking at our direction when my cha-bo-lang cleared the full-load of groceries out of the trolley cart. My wife had to bend forward to take the groceries out from the trolley cart. Hello Ah Pek, dont see see until like that can, I know my cha-bo-lang wore a low collar T-shirt but you don't have to see until saliva also start to drool leh. I told my cha-bo-lang let me cleared the stuff instead for I so afraid later the Chi-Ko-Ah-Pek's heart cannot take it heart attack how?

The Chi-Ko-Ah-Pek kept staring at my cha-bo-lang until I also cannot tahan anymore had to roll up my sleeves to expose my tiger and eagle to frighten the poor Ah Pek away.
